We are excited to introduce PEA Ultra into the Wellness Resources product line to provide you with one of the most potent nutrients available on the market to promote healthy brain and nerve function, as well as other vastly important health areas.
PEA is a special type of lipid naturally produced by your brain and other body tissues. Of all the different lipids identified and needed for brain health, neuroimmune function, and cellular homeostasis, PEA stands at the top of the list.
What is PEA?
PEA (palmitoylethanolamide) is a fatty acid naturally produced in your brain, internal organs, and blood. PEA helps control immune-inflammatory cell responses and acts as a “balancer of inflammatory processes”.
Age, stress, overdoing it, injury, dietary deficiency, or reduced production or rapid breakdown of PEA, lead to decreased levels of this lipid in your body. As PEA levels decline in your brain and tissues, brain stress and age-related decline occurs.
PEA Supports Your Body
PEA naturally promotes healthy nerve and brain function. It supports restful sleep and has a calming effect for mood, stress, and minor pain. PEA protects gut health and modulates immune system function. It affects the resiliency, comfort, and tissue recovery in your muscles and joints like your jaw and knees, etc. It also helps your body recover from athletic stress and wear-and-tear.
PEA is found in small quantities in egg yolks, peanuts, soy lecithin, black-eyed peas, and corn. Smaller amounts are found in lentils, potatoes, dairy, roasted coffee, apples, garden peas, and tomatoes.
Neuroprotective Effects of PEA
PEA is one of the most potent lipids for health and the most important system of your body, the nervous system.
Neurons and glial cells in your brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves produce significant amounts of PEA where it helps regulate the rate of nerve firing and modulation of inflammatory activities. PEA helps nerves signals maintain control when stressed, irritated, and sensitized.
PEA also works with gene signals, nerve polarization, gene transcription mechanisms, activates PPAR alpha receptors involved with maintaining cellular homeostasis, nerve stability and modulation of pro-inflammatory neurochemical pain mechanisms. PPAR activity inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory cytokine and impairs COX enzymes.
Studies show PEA provides a protective effect at receptor sites against the stress of excess glutamate release and amyloid beta in nerve tissues. This neuroprotective effect is related with PEA attaching to cannabinoid and other receptor sites.
PEA supports and protects against age-related brain decline or other events that trigger brain function. PEA helps balance and support cognitive function, mood, balance and movement, muscle-nerve coordination, muscle strength, dopamine and glutamate levels in the brain, and nerve sensations and nerve survival mechanisms.
Research in animals also shows that PEA functionally aids neurodevelopment and brain health during labor and delivery stress. PEA is also naturally found in breast milk.
Cellular Support for Myelin Production
PEA promotes production of myelin sheathing of nerves. Myelin is the fatty coating around nerves that helps nerve signals go faster and protects tissues from free radical stress.
PEA Enhances Sleep Quality
Consider taking PEA to help improve your sleep quality. A recent 8-week clinical trial of PEA showed improved sleep in healthy adults. Results showed that sleep-onset time was reduced. In addition, the time to feel completely awake and cognitive function upon awakening improved. Participants received 350mg of Levagen®+ PEA once per day.
Safe Alternative to CBD
PEA works by several mechanisms, including its ability to indirectly or weakly mimic your brain’s own natural endocannabinoids via an entourage effect. It does not contain THC compounds that are found in CBD and some hemp products.
PEA has been shown to be a safe, effective lipid necessary for brain, nerves, and modulation of numerous mechanisms involved with pain signals. PEA has been studied for over 60 years.
Health benefits of PEA were confirmed in a March 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of double-blind randomized controlled trials in adults. Results of this extensive analysis demonstrated that PEA safely improved quality of life, overall functionality, and comfort and pain management. Other clinical review studies display the positive effect of PEA on musculoskeletal and nerve comfort and quality of life.
